Vertica was a commercial initiative of researchers Michael Stonebraker, Andrew Palmer and others. Initially the DBMS was developed by an independent company, also called Vertica; but it was sold to HP in 2011, and is now part of HP's Haven platform.
It's famous for keeping different copies of the same column in memory/storage, in different orders [TODO: Reference for that?]
