A 'compromise' DBMS table storage model between column storage (DSM or otherwise) and record/row storage (NSM): In PAX, Partitioned-Attributes-Across storage the table is partitioned horizontally, so that each chunk or block has all data for a limited number of records; but within each such chunk, data is stored column-wise, i.e. records are broken up, allowing for more CPU-cache-friendly processing of the chunk.

This model was first proposed by Ailamaki, DeWitt andf D. Hill in 2002, in their paper Data Page Layouts for Relational Databases on Deep Memory Hierarchies .
